A Note From Principal Dana Brummett: Dear McCornack Families,

I wanted to share that I will be out on medical leave beginning January 28, with a tentative return date of March 12. During my absence, I have every confidence in our incredibly skilled McCornack staff to continue providing the highest level of care and commitment to our students, families, and one another. To ensure seamless support for our school community, guest administrators Mike Riplinger (1/28-2/14) and Denisa Talyor (2/17-3/11), both retired after long and dedicated careers in 4J, will be on-site to assist staff, students, and families as needed. Thank you for your understanding and support during this time, and I look forward to returning soon.

Warm regards,

Dana =)

Empty Cereal Boxes Needed: McCornack is looking for empty cereal boxes for a project for our upcoming Family Joy event.  Please drop any and all cereal boxes off in the front office 🙂

McCornack Student Expectations: At the beginning of the year and after each break from school, as a community, we review our expectations for students. Please see the matrix below so that you know what is expected at McCornack. Each week we will highlight a different area of the school. Please take a moment and check in with your student to see if they know the 3 big expectations and how they apply to the specific areas. If you have any questions, please check in with Mrs. Kuhl or anyone on the Climate and Culture team.

This week our highlighted area is the bathrooms: Our basic three school expectations apply outside as well as in the building. See the matrix for specifics about being physically and emotionally safe in the bathrooms as well as being responsible and a caretaker. It's incredibly helpful to go over these with your child at home so that they know that you are aware of McCornack expectations. Please check in with Mrs. Kuhl or anyone on the Climate and Culture team if you have questions regarding any of our school expectations!:

AVID: The strong college-going culture on an AVID Elementary campus encourages students to think about their college and career plans. Schools cover their walls with college pennants and banners, and educators speak about their college experiences. College and careers are no longer foreign concepts, and teachers provide the academic foundation students need to be on a path for college and career success. AVID Elementary closes the opportunity gap before it begins.

Our Character Focus for the month of January is COURAGE: "I am excited to take risks and try new things"

The Bee Jamboree choices for January will be: Hot Cocoa vs. Winter Craft Party

People who are Courageous:

  • Believe in themselves

  • Speak up when something doesn't feel right

  • Stand up to peers when they are mistreating others

  • Try new things and keep going, even when it's difficult

  • Don't give in to peer pressure

  • Are leaders and good role models

  • Have unique thoughts and opinions, think for themselves

Sluggo’s Home Run Reading Challenge: Your student has been challenged by Sluggo and the Eugene Emeralds to take part in Flat Sluggo’s Home Run Reading Program. This program is where reading = Emeralds tickets! Your student has been given a reading goal by their teacher. They also received a special Reading Program bookmark. It is up to your student to track their reading progress on the back of the bookmark. Once your student has completed the challenge make sure they turn in their completed bookmark to their teacher. Students who complete their bookmark will receive TWO (2) free ticket vouchers good for an early season Emeralds game. Bookmarks are due BY MARCH 21st. The ticket vouchers, and instructions on how to redeem those, will be sent home with your student in April.

If you have questions regarding your student’s reading goal, please reach out to their teacher. For

general questions, please contact Nina-Grace Montes with the Emeralds at

ninagrace@emeraldsbaseball.com.

With your support and motivation, your student can hit a home run in reading today!

Kidsports FitKids: The Kidsports FitKids program is a sequence of classes and programs starting with children aged 18 months and older.  The classes provide a sequential pathway for kids to gain skills that allow them to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle throughout their lives.

Fundamental movement skills are the building blocks for participation in active sports and recreational activities.  When kids learn age appropriate fundamental movement skills like jumping, catching, running, hopping and kicking, it directly helps them to participate in active healthy play at school, after school activities, during PE classes, and team sport opportunities which lead them to a lifetime of physical activity.

**All FitKids classes are open and welcome to kids of all abilities. We recognize that some children will require additional support to participate fully. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to contact Program Director, Beth Nitkowski at bethn@kidsports.org  to create a personalized inclusion to support the youth’s individual needs for class.
