AVID: What is WICOR???

Now that we have explained WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Communication, Organization and Reading), AVID’s support structure, let’s dig into each critical area:

The O in WICOR stands for ORGANIZATION. Organization in Elementary school includes learning how to manage materials, time, and self. Students are introduced to planning and prioritizing school, homework and social tasks. Students engage in goal-setting, planning, and reflection. And finally the ultimate goal is for students to strategically and intentionally take responsibility for one’s own learning. Students who learn to organize reach goals, develop and use tools to organize thinking, resources, and time. They also learn to study and really engage in their learning.

At McCornack, some ways we incorporate organization include: binders, calendars, planners, and agendas. Students are exposed to different ways of taking notes, the use of graphic organizers and goal setting.

McCornack is an AVID Elementary school.

Our Character Focus for the month of March is Curiosity and Problem Solving:

"I wonder about the world around me. I focus on solutions."

The Bee Jamboree choices for March will be: Bubblepalooza vs. End of Day Slumber Party

People who are Curious Problem Solvers:

  • ask questions

  • are rarely bored

  • are motivated and love to learn

  • are willing to make mistakes

  • are creative

  • have a sense of adventure

  • stay focused on solutions

BottleDrop Fundraiser: From February 21st-March 21st, McCornack AVID Leadership team will be heading up our BottleDrop Fundraiser. If you are interested in helping raise money for McCornack PTO general fund, please consider donating during this can & bottle drive! Students will be collecting filled bags of cans before and after school each day. If you would like to fill a bag, please contact the front office and ask for a bag to be sent home with your child this month. Bags can also be dropped off/picked up on Service Saturday, March 1, 2025 (9-11am). Our goal is to fill 100 bags during this time. Can you help?

Sluggo’s Home Run Reading Challenge: Your student has been challenged by Sluggo and the Eugene Emeralds to take part in Flat Sluggo’s Home Run Reading Program. This program is where reading = Emeralds tickets! Your student has been given a reading goal by their teacher. They also received a special Reading Program bookmark. It is up to your student to track their reading progress on the back of the bookmark. Once your student has completed the challenge make sure they turn in their completed bookmark to their teacher. Students who complete their bookmark will receive TWO (2) free ticket vouchers good for an early season Emeralds game. Bookmarks are due BY MARCH 21st. The ticket vouchers, and instructions on how to redeem those, will be sent home with your student in April.

If you have questions regarding your student’s reading goal, please reach out to their teacher. For

general questions, please contact Nina-Grace Montes with the Emeralds at
