AVID: What is WICOR???
Now that we have explained WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Communication, Organization and Reading), AVID’s support structure, let’s dig into each critical area:
The next WICOR strategy is COLLABORATION -read on to find out more about how your child is taught to collaborate in the classroom and in elementary school in general. These skills are lifetime skills that both help in education but also in dealing with the world around them
Collaboration is having positive group interactions. This could include the whole class, small groups, grade level time (at lunch or recess), etc. Children are also taught teamwork with shared responsibility and learn how to share their ideas, information and opinions with one another.
When students collaborate a safe and supportive physical and philosophical environment is created. Kids learn how to work through identified structures and roles to achieve a common goal. They develop positive interdependence. Students learn to clearly communicate verbally and nonverbally as well as listen effectively to decipher meaning. Finally, students who learn to collaborate, deepen the learning of others through inquiry and active engagement.
McCornack is an AVID Elementary school.
