McCornack 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade School Supply Information
for the 2018-2019 School Year:

As we are focusing on organization this year (more details below), all students will have specific notebooks and other materials and supplies that they are expected to use and maintain. Instead of asking parents for the very specific materials that we need, we will instead collect an annual $40 supply fee for each 3rd, 4th and 5th grade student. The two other supplies we are asking you to provide are a backpack and individual headsets for your child to use with their assigned computer or iPad throughout the year. Payment plans and scholarships are available to help any family.

Supply fees can be paid in the front office by check or cash. We are planning to be able to take credit/debit cards in the fall. You can also set up a payment plan with the front office.

What is AVID?

AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) Elementary is a program that we are introducing this fall for all of our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students.  It focuses on college and career readiness and the idea that all students can get career and technical training beyond high school or go to college.  We are excited for this opportunity at McCornack Elementary School. It is not changing the curriculum we already teach, just adding best practices and organizational structure into the classroom day.  The framework for AVID Elementary includes Organization, Student Success Skills, Partnerships and more. While we will be introducing all these components to the students throughout grade levels, our primary focus for this first year will be organization.

By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID Elementary teachers create a ripple effect in later grades. Elementary students develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, college and careers in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Children learn about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. AVID Elementary students take structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers.

We are excited for this new opportunity and look forward to an exciting fall!

Summer Meal Programs

4J Summer Meals Program

Kids eat free in the summer!  ALL Children Welcome!  NO forms to fill out. FREE for anyone 18 and under. The free summer food program is operated by 4J and Food for Lane County.

Parent helpers needed:  We have many jobs such as clean up, litter patrol, and serving food. Just come with your kids to one of the school sites, and we’ll give you a free lunch for helping out! We look forward to providing meals to the children of our community.

Food must be consumed onsite.

FUN events in June!  Let’s make them the BEST EVER!
The two most exciting and fun events of the year are coming up very soon – Carnival and Field Day!!! Let’s make it the best Carnival and the best Field Day ever! Please read on to find out how you can help us make that happen!!!
Carnival: Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 5:30-8:00pm
Carnival is a year-end celebration for our school, but it is also a major fundraiser for McCornack. The money fundraised at this event directly supports teachers and classroom learning, as well as school programs. 
Field Day: Tuesday, June 12, 2018 (schedule by grade level is below)
Field Day includes lots of fun games for the children to enjoy on the McCornack playground, and is organized by our gym teacher, Mr. Mac! The kids have so much fun at this event! We need 12 volunteers, per grade, for this event (about 1-2 volunteers per station)! Principal’s Post

Musings from Ms. Rochholz:

You know that time during a flight when the plane just touches down and the engines go into reverse thrust (depending on the aircraft) in order to come to a stop?  I used to NOT LIKE that part of a flight.  I would close my eyes and grit my teeth.  And hold my special bag for nausea.
Then I had a friend who LOVED that part of the flight.  She thought it was the best part of the whole flight.  I think of Emily every time I land.  It changed my whole way of thinking about it.
We are just touching down on our school year…it feels like the engines are powerful. We are coming to a stop soon.

I LOVE the celebrations and the sense of accomplishment June brings.
